5 things to know before painting a house

They say a house reflects an individual’s personality. Painting the house with the
right colors is one way to bring out that personality. It can change the mood and
feel of the house. Painting is an easy yet complex process. There are some people

who are satisfied with the basic colors and then there are others who like to
experiment with bold colors.
Here are a few pointers to help make painting your house an easy experience –

  • Prepare the rooms
It is important to clean the rooms thoroughly before painting. All the debris and
dirt must be cleaned from the walls. Whether you see it or not, there is built up dirt
and stains on the wall. Doing this allows the paint to adhere easily to the wall.
Close any nail holes or cracks. Cover the switches, lights, window panes, and
floors with waste sheets or newspapers. You don’t want stains of paint on them, do
you? Move the decorative items and furniture into another room or cover them up.
Priming the walls is another important step to follow while prepping. The primer
seals the imperfections on the wall giving a base for the paint to adhere to the wall
evenly. However, primer or no primer, cleaning is a must.
  • Test the paint for color correctness and quality
It is a challenge to understand how an envisioned color will look on the walls
under different lighting. If you have a color in mind, pick a sample and observe the
color during the day and night times. This will give an idea of how the color will
look on the wall and if it fits your vision. If you are unsure of the colors, pick
multiple color samples and try them. For example, to create a comforting vibe, pick
shades like buttery yellows and pastels. For a more calm feeling, shades of light
green such as sage, mint or pine work best. If you wish to feel energized, pick
vibrant hues like cool blue, vintage pink, or forest green, they do the trick. To
achieve a minimal and spacious feel, neutral shades complement the best. To make
a small room appear big and airy use shades like purple or blue. Remember, it is
important to choose the right emulsions and paints from a good brand.

  • Pay attention to the finish
While color is one part, the finish achieved is equally important. Glossy finish
tackles stains, is durable and easier to clean. But, the downfall of having a glossy
finish is it highlights imperfections. A flat or matte finish hides the imperfections
but they can be easily damaged. Semi-gloss is a good choice for bathrooms and
kitchens because they’re easily washable. Choose a satin sheen finish for the
kitchen and bathroom, if you don’t like the idea of the shine from the gloss.
Eggshell finishes are a great option to consider. It gives just enough gloss, simple
to clean, hides the imperfections and is not easily prone to damage.

  • Know how much paint is required
It is frustrating to either run out of paint or end up with too much unused paint. To
avoid this problem, it is important to know the dimensions of the room, the number
of coats of paint required and plan accordingly. Here is a tool that can help
calculate the amount of paint that is required for your specific need. If you are priming the walls first, one coat of paint is enough. A double coating is recommended if the walls aren’t primed.
  • Brush before rolling
Use a high-quality brush to paint the corners of the ceiling and the walls. These are
areas that a roller cannot reach. To flatten out any brush marks, use a roller, leaving

you with a smooth flat surface.

As you’ve seen above, a little bit of preparation and thought can make painting
your house a simple and fun task. A pop of color is all it takes to lift the mood.
